BOOKS ALIVE!

For over twelve years, the Books Alive! team has endeavored to fulfill its mission to unify and heal through the arts by creating engaging programming that appeals to educators and students alike.

Our very name illustrates our primary program -

bringing BOOKS ALIVE! by presenting beloved children’s books adapted into original, fully staged musicals, brought to life by our professional touring company, promoting literacy and introducing audiences to the magic of theatre!

Expanding our opportunities to reach more hearts and minds, we developed for our youngest and limited mobility audiences, our StoryTime series, and for those places unable to host a performance, our Anywhere Edition - digitally distributed videos.

We have the privilege of reaching over 20,000 each year touring throughout the Houston Metroplex:

PreK & Elementary Schools in: Katy...Fort Bend...Houston...Spring Branch...Cy-Fair...Lamar;

Texas Children's & MD Anderson Children's Cancer Hospitals;    Brookwood Communities;

Houston Public, Harris County & Fort Bend County Libraries;    YMCA of Greater Houston

Arts, the great equalizer...

For many underserved children in our poorest communities, advanced reading skills, and literacy in general, will help free them from the limits placed on them by poverty.  Even within a particular school, a diverse population represents a wide range of socio-economic backgroungs.  When it comes to education and equity, leveling the playing field where all students have access to quality programming is vital.  It has been shown that arts programming provides this leveling opportunity better than anything else.

ARTreach Artist In Residence

To better serve the ideal of unifying and healing through the arts, Books Alive! is an Artist in Residence, partnering with ARTreach, who’s mission is to provide mentoring and art-related programs to a growing at risk population.  ARTreach seeks and provides funding for subsidized Books Alive! performances for the communities of Harris, Fort Bend, Spring Branch and Cypress Counties.

Each year, Books Alive...

  • Produces a new original musical production.

  • Schedules over sixty touring performance dates.

  • Turns away hopeful organizations due to limited availability.

  • Contracts an average of fifteen acting and design professionals annually.

  • Develops 1-2 new scripts for future tours.

  • Performs for combined audiences of well over 20,000 annually.
